Position Summary

The Lab & Research Specialist II position provides technical assistance in a population genetics laboratory to include both technical and administrative support.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provides technical assistance in population genetics, molecular, phylogenetic and population genomic studies.
  • Order supplies and maintains inventory.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and order supplies.
  • Monitor lab budget to ensure it is within budget and resources are used efficiently.
Required Qualifications

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology or the equivalent combination of education, training or experience.

Competencies:

  • Working knowledge of basic laboratory safety protocols and processes.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to perform basic statistical analysis.
  • Proficiency with a variety of software applications including MS office suite.
  • Familiarity with computer programs including MS office suite.
  • Knowledge of budgeting /fiscal principles, with the ability to monitor financials, order supplies and maintain inventory.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience with molecular techniques.
  • Familiarity with archiving of samples.
  • Familiarity with basic statistical analysis.
  • Experience with computer programs including MS office suite.
Preferred Qualifications

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in biology, genetics, molecular biology is desirable.

Competencies :

  • Demonstrated knowledge of molecular methods including DNA isolation, PCR, qPCR and DNA sequencing.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with others.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience with PCR, qPCR and DNA sequencing is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience with MS office suite, GIS, and genetics programs (e.g., MacVector, Sequencher, R) is a plus.

Conditions of Employment:
  • This position is a temporary (hourly) position not to exceed 6 months. All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed on average 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve month period beginning May 1 each year.
  • This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive over-time in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
  • The job will largely be during regular hours (M-F 8-5:00), however occasional
    night and weekend work as well as occasional overnight travel may be required.
