Position Summary

The Associate Director of Regional Advancement – DC Metro is part of a team that focuses on William and Mary’s donors and prospects in the DC Metro Area. The team’s goal is to create a culture of lifelong engagement and philanthropy among constituents in the region who are at the principal, major, planned and leadership gift levels.

The DC Metro Team will achieve its goals by working in a highly collaborative fashion with faculty members, constituent development officers in the schools across campus, and with internal partners in William and Mary’s Alumni Association, Annual Giving, Reunion Giving, Marketing and Communications, Donor Relations and Stewardship.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Regional Advancement – DC, the Associate Director works closely with other members of the team to implement a regionally-focused advancement strategy for Metro-DC.

The Associate Director will be expected to develop the portfolio into a robust major gift portfolio by the end of year two managing a portfolio of 125-150 prospects minimum, with one-on- one cultivation activities and solicitations of gifts. Goal expected to secure $1 million to $2 million in gifts annually once the portfolio is established.

Responsibilities include (but not limited to):

  • Works with the senior regional director and regional and central university colleagues to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, close gifts and steward donors and prospects with major gift capacity.
  • Manages complex internal and external relationships as well as multiple projects simultaneously, and helps coordinate advancement activities in the region, and works collaboratively with staff and university-wide partners.
  • Takes a lead role in planning and implementing development and engagement activities in the region.
  • Takes the lead in coordinating prospect research with the Prospect Development and Information Strategy team to identify new major donor individual/institutional prospects from the database and other sources.
  • Reviews listings of alumni, parents and friends from the database and other publicly available sources; and helps develop individual strategies to engage and cultivate them for new gifts.
  • Prepares letters of inquiry and proposals to prospects and donors on behalf of the university, requesting support for endowment, education, research and capital priorities.
  • Researches and writes briefings to prepare colleagues, including leadership and faculty, for effective meetings with major gift prospects.
  • Directs follow-up correspondences and objectives resulting from donor meetings. Documents all advancement activity in the donor/prospect database.
  • Suggests potential prospects for trustee and advisory boards.
Required Qualifications

EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree required with substantive related experience or specialized expertise directly related to the position.

COMPETENCIES:

  • Strong working knowledge of fundraising principles with the ability to identify, qualify and cultivate prospective donors.
  • Desire to reach aggressive goals with the ability to solicit and secure private gifts.
  • A result oriented, self-starter with demonstrable initiative and a strong work ethic with the ability to work independently on and off campus.
  • Strong interpersonal, listening and communication skills with a commitment to teamwork and willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues from across the institution.
  • Strong writing skills and the ability to draft compelling proposals.
  • Proficiency in a variety of software applications to include MS office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
  • Strong problem solving skills with the ability to effectively resolve issues, while exercising sound judgment and diplomacy in all interactions.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple relationships and tasks concurrently with fluidity.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience soliciting/closing major gifts in a higher education or non-profit setting.
  • Equivalent experience in sales or a related field will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications

EDUCATION:
Advanced degree (preferably a Master’s degree in Business or other related field) is highly preferred.

COMPETENCIES:
Familiarity with the Advance database is a plus.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Substantive experience soliciting/closing major gifts is highly desirable.
  • Previous management and/or supervisory experience is desirable.
