Position Summary

The Senior Director of Regional Advancement – West Coast serves as the lead advancement officer on behalf of William & Mary in that region. This position serves as the strategic leader and executor for all development, engagement and volunteer activity for William & Mary’s advancement efforts and for all three goals – increased alumni engagement; 40% alumni participation; $1 Billion – for W&M’s For the Bold campaign.

The Senior Director of Regional Advancement – West Coast can best be thought of as the market leader for all fundraising activity in the designated region. Residing and working in the San Francisco Bay area, they serve as the key front line advancement officer for the region and is responsible for identifying, qualifying, cultivating and soliciting gifts from individuals, their personal foundations, and select corporations and foundations ranging from $50,000 to $1 million+ for the university’s priorities and for building a sustainable pipeline of prospects and donors for the end of this campaign and beyond.

The West Coast region includes the states west of the Rockies and primarily California, Washington, Oregon, and Arizona. More than 8,000 alumni parents, and friends reside in this region.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field with substantive and progressively responsible professional experience or specialized expertise directly related to the position.


  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
  • Strategic vision to create and execute creative individual and region-wide donor and prospect strategies to harness the potential of the larger alumni community toward engagement and philanthropic goals.
  • Fluency in using persuasive language to promote visionary gift opportunities, with the proven ability to identify, qualify and cultivate prospective major gift donors and desire to reach aggressive goals.
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to handle multiple and complex tasks and projects concurrently.
  • Strong work ethic and integrity, and a commitment to teamwork and willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues from across the institution.
  • High level of independence and ability to work effectively and successfully off-campus and without close supervision in a metrics and data-driven organization;

Significant and progressively responsible experience in academic fundraising or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree or other advanced degree in related field is highly preferred.


  • Familiarity with and knowledge of William & Mary.


  • Previous management and or supervisory experience is highly desired.
  • Advancement experience in higher education is a plus.
