Position Summary

To protect life and property and enforce the laws of the Commonwealth as well as the Rules and Regulations of the College of William and Mary in such a manner as to create an environment conducive to the educational mission of The College of William and Mary.

Required Qualifications

• An ability to evaluate situations and make routine independent decisions under conditions ranging from predetermined to unknown.
• Ability to exercise significant authority over individuals in the public, to detain and affect arrests.
• Responsible for investigation of cases, specialized training, and coordination of work within their field of expertise.
• Sound judgment in the proper application and interpretation of laws and regulations is required. Appropriate interaction with the court, local police and Sheriffs Office, attorneys and other officials.
• An open approach to all situations to consider all aspects and the impact and/or potential outcome.
• Proficiency with computers and their various applications.
• Demonstrated ability to read and write, follow written and verbal instructions, prepare reports, and perform essential physical requirements of the job and during inclement weather conditions.

Special Licenses, Registration or Certifications:
• Education or Training: High School graduate or equivalent
• Completion of the Criminal Justice Basic Police Academy or completed within one year of hire
• Valid Division of Motor Vehicles operator’s license.
• Ability to successfully complete a specified law enforcement training program within 1 year of hire.
• Ability to obtain and maintain certification in CPR and First AID.

Preferred Qualifications

• College preferred – relevant experience with public contact may be substituted.

• Current Virginia law enforcement certification.

• Extensive work in a public contact environment is desired.

Special Application Instructions
Conditions of Employment:

• Rotating shifts with holidays and weekends duty.
• A medical evaluation with a drug screen is required. Finalist will be subject to a comprehensive background check.
• Completion of the Criminal Justice Basic Police Academy or completed within one year of hire
• Valid Division of Motor Vehicles operator’s license.
• Ability to successfully complete a specified law enforcement training program within 1 year of hire.
• Ability to obtain and maintain certification in CPR and First AID.
• This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.
