Position Summary

An ombuds is a designated neutral or impartial practitioner whose major function is to provide confidential and informal assistance to targeted constituents of the university community. Serving as a designated neutral, the ombuds is neither an advocate for any individual nor the organization, but instead, an advocate for fairness. The role of an ombuds is to supplement, rather than replace, the university’s existing resources for conflict resolution.

The College of William &Mary Ombuds serves as an alternate and informal resource for employees seeking assistance with workplace concerns. The ombuds will listen to employee issues and help outline possible courses of action. A decision can then be made as to how to move forward – if at all. The services of the ombuds are voluntary as well as confidential and off the record. The ombuds is not an agent of notice for the institution.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and significant or extensive professional level of experience or specialized expertise.
• Mediation or conflict resolution or comparable relevant experience
• Demonstrates knowledge of professional ombuds standards, codes of ethics, procedures, and principles and techniques for informal inquiries.
• Demonstrates the ability to organize, analyze and report data to various levels within the organization

Preferred Qualifications

• An advanced degree is preferred
• A demonstrated understanding of diverse cultures and backgrounds
• Knowledge of higher education, its structure and policies and practices

Conditions of Employment:

• The incumbent must be, or be willing to be, an active member of appropriate professional organizations; in particular, The International Ombudsman Association (IOA) in order to stay current and on the leading edge of critical ombuds’ issues such as confidentiality and privilege.
• Additionally, an ombuds’ skills should be continually enhanced through training courses appropriate to/commensurate with goals of the institution and professional level of incumbent.
• This position is a 75% time position; specific hours will vary with the needs of the position and College.
