Position Summary

James Monroe’s Highland is the home of the fifth President of the United States, and is owned and operated by the College of William & Mary. The work location is James Monroe’s Highland, located in Charlottesville, in Albemarle County, Virginia.

The Custodial Worker provides cleaning and maintenance services within designated buildings and event facilities. The position
maintains the upkeep and cleanliness of buildings and event facilities and to ensure a clean environment is maintained for all staff, facilities renters and visitors.

Specific responsibilities include (but not limited to):

  • Cleans/Sanitizes restrooms, event facilities, meeting spaces, public viewing areas, internal office spaces, storage areas.
  • Cleans light fixtures and changing bulbs. Wash windows and window sills. Stocks, organizes and creates order lists for custodial supplies.
  • Picks up trash and debris around event areas. Haul trash to dumpster. Washes out trash cans.
  • Performs event set up and tear down to include: tables, chairs, equipment, decor.
Required Qualifications

COMPETENCIES:

  • Knowledge of general custodial and/or housekeeping practices.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills with the ability get along with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and write, follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to operate powered and manual cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to properly use or learn to use all cleaning chemicals, including automatic dilution systems or other systems used by the college facility.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs and tolerate frequent bending and climbing stairs.
  • Ability to tolerate and withstand the use of chemicals.
Preferred Qualifications

EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or equivalent.

COMPETENCIES:
Knowledge of commercial cleaning methods.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in commercial cleaning practices preferred.
  • Experience in dry and wet mopping, stripping, burnishing, buffing floors and shampooing of carpeting, as well as sanitizing restrooms and replenishing supplies) highly preferred.

This position is located in Albemarle County, Virginia. The successful applicant will work in this location.

Conditions of Employment:
  • This position is a part-time (hourly paid), non-exempt position, eligible to receive over-time in accordance with the fair labor standards act.
  • All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed, on average, 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve month period beginning May 1 each year.
  • This position may be subject to overtime and schedule changes and may be required to work shifts during weekends, holidays and special events.
  • Position requires flexibility in scheduling to be available to accommodate special events and/or unscheduled work assignments.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs and tolerate frequent bending and climbing stairs.
