Position Summary

The Makerspace director will coordinate resources, policies, and activities that pertain to several hands-on prototyping and fabrication laboratories (i.e., “Makerspaces”) on campus. The Makerspace director will formulate policies for use of the facilities, institute training and safety protocols, and teach appropriate undergraduate courses in the new Engineering Physics and Applied Design (EPAD) curriculum along with other tracks in W&M’s nascent Engineering program. The Makerspace Director will:
• Develop and execute training on specialized equipment.
• Propose and develop workshops.
• Provide for innovative interdisciplinary space using new tools of rapid prototyping and digitally driven software including machine shop tools, laser cutters, milling machines, 3D printers, injection molding machines, wood working tools, electronic bench supplies, computers (Mac and PC), 3D design, simulation and assembly and testing.
• Maintain daily records of activities of members and partners use of lab equipment, tools, and supplies to be able to develop strategies for queuing jobs and using resources in a sustainable way.
• Perform checks of equipment, perform routine maintenance, and work with outside vendors.
• Create an environment for open exchange of ideas and collaboration opportunities.
• Provide coordination and continuous improvement in scaling up high-tech innovative labs across campus to include facilities in arts & sciences, education, business, digital humanities, law, libraries, and marine science.

Required Qualifications

An M.S. degree in an engineering-related discipline. Practical experience in industry, industrial design, architecture, or a closely related field. Demonstrated experience in working with high-tech specialized equipment for Makerspace and prototype development. Demonstrated ability and experience in relevant topics in computer science, engineering, robotics, and/or electronics.

Preferred Qualifications

A Ph.D. in an engineering-related discipline. Working knowledge and experience in Makerspace and manufacturing labs and/or advanced manufacturing or rapid prototyping tools including 3D printers, laser cutter, CNC, lathes, milling, injection molding, PCB fabrication and testing. Understanding of use of hand tools, electronics, computer software, hardware, and various other technologies. Familiarity in entrepreneurship and programming. Excellent interpersonal communications and presentation skills. Ability to promote programs, solve problems, and interact with diverse individuals at all levels.
