Position Summary

University Advancement at the College of William & Mary is seeking qualified applicants to join their dynamic team. The Design & Photography Specialist will provide support to the Art Director, Senior Graphic Designer and university marketing & advancement communications (UMAC) as a whole to create visual communication solutions. Adhering to the visual identity of the university, the design & photography specialist will find the most effective way to get messages across in print and digital media using a variety of methods such as color, type, illustration, photography and various layout techniques. The Design & Photography specialist will also work on presentation materials for senior staff as well as fulfill a variety of photography needs for university advancement and work to develop and maintain a photographic database.

This position reports directly to the Art Director. Internal relationships include all units within the university advancement structure and units functioning within strategic initiatives, specifically the offices of university web & design and university relations. External relationships include contact with vendors that specialize in the production of creative and multimedia projects.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.


  • Knowledge of contemporary design and its role in the development of organizational communications.
  • Photography and digital photo editing skills.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, specifically InDesign, Photoshop, Lightroom, and Illustrator.
  • Expertise in the creative use of type, illustration and photography as design elements, with the ability to create artwork and capture photographs that conform to the style and content specifications provided while conveying the William & Mary brand and campaign story.
  • Demonstrated high levels of creativity,
    invention, imagination, originality, and talent in all aspects of graphic design.
  • Great degree of flexibility, efficiency and initiative in work style, especially under deadline constraints.
  • High level of discretion and independent judgment, with the demonstrated possession of diplomacy & tact when working with individuals on and off campus, and responding to Advancement audiences.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, planning, strategic, conceptual, problem-solving, and presentation development skills, with the ability to visually conceptualize and organize data for presentations and other communications.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and decision-making skills, with the demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems.
  • Strong ability to work within a team environment and collaborate with clients, editors, photographers, vendors and management.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities (or projects) and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and diverse work environment.

Professional experience in graphic design or related field as well as a portfolio that demonstrates strong creative proficiency.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree in design, photography, or related discipline.


  • Hand or digital illustration skills preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of web design desired.
  • Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) in one of more products preferred.


  • Experience working with non-profit or higher education institutions is preferred.
  • Experience with Flash, CSS, and HTML is desired.

Conditions of Employment:
  • This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.
  • Subject to evening and weekend work to meet deadlines.
