Position Summary

University Advancement at William & Mary includes efforts related to alumni engagement, private fundraising and philanthropic outreach, and marketing and advancement communications.

The Office of University Advancement is seeking dynamic, highly motivated, experienced applicants for the position of AVP of University Marketing & Advancement Communications.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Associate Vice President (AVP) for University Marketing and Advancement Communications reports to the Vice President for University Advancement.

This position serves as University Advancement’s communications ambassador/liaison, designing significant and leading-edge messaging parallel to and integrated with William & Mary’s national image, cultivating relationships with internal and external constituencies while promoting positive attachments to University Advancement and the University.

The position will represent the Office of University Advancement throughout the university community, including with its faculty, students, alumni, parents, and other external constituencies. Internal relationships include all University Advancement personnel, as well as the University Communications teams and other marketing and communications teams throughout the University.

Responsibilities also include:

  • Oversight for strategic communications and brand development as it relates to alumni engagement, advancement and campaign efforts.
  • Operates as as a key communications and marketing leader, will direct a highly-targeted, research-based, content-driven communications, marketing, events, and stewardship function.
  • Supervisory responsibilities include the Executive Director of Stewardship and Advancement Events, Executive Director of University Marketing and Advancement Communications, and Administrative Coordinator.
Required Qualifications

EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s Degree is required along with extensive professional experience in private or public-sector marketing, communications, or fundraising to include substantive experience in senior management or supervisory capacity.

  • An appreciation for, and an ability to articulate eloquently, the particular mission of William & Mary and its aspirations, curricula, and programs, with an understanding of William & Mary’s dignified brand and the appropriate ways to market it and the campaigns to support it.
  • An understanding of current and emerging technologies to successfully reach targeted constituent populations.
  • Outstanding collaborative skills and a strong business acumen to garner the trust and confidence of senior colleagues across the University, including the President, Provost, Vice Presidents, Deans, faculty and staff, as well as high-level alumni, parents, friends, and donors of the University.
  • Superior strategic planning skills, with the ability to envision, develop and implement a world-class marketing and communications program that includes stewardship and events.
  • Intellectual depth and professional maturity, with proven advanced oral communication skills and a demonstrated fluency in using persuasive language to promote visionary opportunities.
  • Proven ability to build consensus and strong collaborative relationships across a large and matrixed organization, with the demonstrated ability to identify key and strategic opportunities for close collaboration with campus partners and turn those opportunities into actionable plans that provide tangible results.
  • Dynamic Leadership skills fostering a productive and effective environment where staff is committed and takes pride in its work. Strong values and a very strong affinity for building high performing teams.
  • Exceptional advanced writing and editing skills and proven abilities to produce well- articulated communications, in both quantity and quality., with the ability to recognize good writing by others.
  • Tact, sensitivity and mature judgment are required. Must be professional, organized, creative and efficient, able to work successfully both individually and as a part of a team.
  • Strong ability to manage multiple projects and personnel relationships simultaneously and work autonomously under pressure of multiple and sequential deadlines with the flexibility to prioritize competing priorities in order to serve all internal clients appropriately.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Extensive professional experience in private or public-sector marketing, communications, or fundraising.
  • Substantive experience in senior management or in a supervisory role.
  • Experience in progressively responsible communication roles in nonprofit or for-profit organizations.
Preferred Qualifications

EDUCATION:
Master’s degree in Marketing, Public Relations are a closely related field is highly desirable.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in fundraising communications is highly desirable.
  • Experience in higher education and/or one of the following backgrounds will also be considered:

POLITICAL/PUBLIC AFFAIRS: Planning, implementing and leading highly-targeted, large-scale political campaigns;

CORPORATE: As a senior member of a marketing and communications function within a large, multi-national corporation;

GRADUATE BUSINESS SCHOOL: Providing aggressive, marketing, branding and communications leadership at a leading graduate business school.
