Position Summary

The School of Education Office of Advancement and External Relations is responsible for raising private funds, supporting volunteer engagement, increasing the visibility of the school and its faculty, and partnering with key internal and external stakeholders to advance the School of Education’s mission.

The Advancement & Communications Specialist position supports the Director of Development and the Communications Manager by coordinating projects to advance the School of Education’s fundraising, engagement, and communication initiatives. This position serves a broad range of internal constituents and external constituents (alumni, donors, vendors) to achieve office goals. Reporting to the Director of Development, the Advancement & Communications Specialist works under general supervision and requires initiative, independent judgement and specialized knowledge.

Core responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):
Manages donor stewardship to include acknowledgement letters, customized communications from the dean, scholarship reports and other strategic outreach to steward donors.

Coordinates external communications in partnership with Communications Manager. Facilitates annual appeals and other special in-house mailings, manages data for electronic newsletter and other publications for dissemination, and assists with social media efforts.

Maintains and updates webpages through the Cascade Content Management system and ensures content is accurate, comprehensive and up to date. Writes stories as needed to highlight the work of school’s faculty, students and alumni.

Provides logistical support for events for external audiences to include planning all aspects of events, managing invitations/responses, and working with Communications Manager to implement marketing/outreach plan. Attends and helps staff events.

Supports the School of Education Development Board by providing logistical support for three meeting per year, serves as resource to board members as needed, manages information for board reports and special projects.

Provides overall support to the Advancement and External Relations office to include purchasing supplies, processing travel reimbursements, providing editing and proofreading support to directors, and working with outside vendors.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent with substantive office administration experience.

Strong working knowledge of general office policies and processes.

Demonstrated proficiency with a variety of software applications, including MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) as well as web-based applications.

Experience using databases, extracting data and running reports.

Ability to analyze data, track metrics, and make program recommendations.

Strong proofreading and editing skills with a careful attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to work independently while managing multiple tasks, relationships and other competing priorities within tight deadlines.

Strong interpersonal, oral and written communications skills with the ability to interface effectively with a diverse constituency including faculty, staff, students and alumni, and work collaboratively as a strong team player.

Experience composing professional communications (letters, marketing materials, and social media content).

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related field or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Experience working in a non-profit or higher education setting.

Conditions of Employment:

This position may occasionally require working extended days, in the evenings and weekends, at a variety of locations, as needed for events.

This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.

Events require lifting, walking, periods of standing.
