Position Summary

William & Mary is seeking qualified applicants for the Museum Shop Manager at James Monroe’s Highland located in Charlottesville, VA.

The Museum Shop at James Monroe’s Highland provides the first point of contact for the public, offering guest services including information, ticket sales, and a retail operation.

The Museum Shop Manager ensures quality customer service at the front-end of the visitor experience, and sustains a viable, reliable and profitable Museum Shop operation.

The position will manage the daily retail operations of the museum shop including selection and purchasing of merchandise in accord with museum mission, inventory management, record keeping, merchandise display and effectively manage the shop personnel.

The Museum Shop Manager also contributes to the marketing and education aspects of James Monroe’s Highland by participating in customer cultivation, outreach, surveys, and focus groups, and leading customer service training.

Responsibilities also include:

  • Hiring, scheduling and training museum shop personnel. Oversees customer service, sales transactions and promotion of merchandise.
  • Selects and purchases stock that reflects the museum’s mission. Care and cultivation of partner Virginia Artisans and other consigners. Arranges and maintains the public display of items in the Museum Shop. Conducts physical inventory on an annual basis.
  • Manages procurement activities for the Museum Shop (accurately and promptly submits requisitions through eVA for processing, reconciles credit card purchases).
Required Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent required.


  • Knowledge of retail sales or retail operations, with the ability to maintain inventory.
  • Knowledge in purchasing, stocking, record keeping, and the budget cycle.
  • Familiarity with marketing principles with the ability to envision, market and expand inventory and revenue.
  • Proven skills in using a Point of Sale (POS) system, processing cash, checks and credit card sales transactions.
  • Strong attention to detail, demonstrated accuracy, with strong mathematical skills and the ability to perform basic calculations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, strong communication and customer orientation skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal and external constituencies, while exercising sound judgment and diplomacy in all interactions.
  • Strong organization skills and the ability to work independently while managing tasks with competing priorities.
  • Proficiency in a variety of software applications to include MS Office (specifically Word, Excel), and web-based applications, and familiarity with Quickbooks or similar program.
  • Excellent customer service skills with a strong public relations. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to train and oversee the work of others.


  • Experience using a POS system.
  • Demonstrated experience reconciling sales.
  • Demonstrated experience in Excel to include creating spreadsheets to analyzing data.
  • Experience working in a Gift Shop, Museum or Visitor’s Center.
Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education, training and / or experience.


  • Interest in the historic context surrounding James Monroe’s Highland and in engaging an active public.
  • Skills in staff development, and public outreach is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated skills in Quickbooks is highly desirable.


  • Demonstrated experience as a lead in retail sales or handling office retail administration (to include working with deposits, and inventory control) is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working as a Gift/Museum Shop Manager or lead is highly desirable.
  • Experience using Quickbook or similar accounting software.
