Position Summary

The Director of Digital Strategy and Content Curation leads the day-to-day development and execution of The Mason School of Business’ digital communications strategy, which includes creating original content, and the curation of third-party content. This key leadership position oversees Mason’s website and social media networks as primary distribution channels, and develops content to be used in our acquisition marketing campaigns to generate inquiries into our academic programs. This includes but is not limited to the development of video, electronic publications, news stories, infographics, general editorial and other digital applications and content. They are first and foremost a storyteller, able to craft interesting and compelling narratives from concept to completion. They must be an outstanding writer, passionate about digital media, social media and creating an incredible user experience on

They must be adept at juggling and managing multiple projects simultaneously through their own work, and managing others both directly and indirectly. Direct reports include our Website Manager, 1-3 graduate assistants and 2-4 undergraduate students (all expected to work at professional levels), professional freelance/contractors and Agency 1693 project teams. They must also build a bridge to William & Mary’s Institutional Creative Services team, lobby for resources when appropriate and collaborate on projects. This position manages an annual budget of $50,000 to $100,000 for freelance/contract videography, editing, design, programming, and application development, among other outside expenditures.

Strong project management skills are essential, along with adaptability to a changing environment, and a willingness to step into any situation as a problem solver. They must be able to work both as a proactive developer of content, and a reactive collaborator and support resource for other members of the marketing team, and broader Mason School of Business community. They must enjoy mentoring students and cultivate their skills, allowing them to become productive members of the Mason School of Business marketing team. As both a manager of professional staff and students, they must inspire and motivate their direct reports and cultivate a collaborative environment where all team members feel valued, and contribute at professional levels.

There are both direct measures of the effectiveness of this position, as well as interdependent measures of effectiveness. As the position responsible for the day-to-day management of our social media networks and, shares, likes and growth in followers is a critical measure of success, and continuous improvement in these measures of “engagement” will be evaluated in the position’s performance metrics for social media. The continuous improvement of the user experience on our website will be evaluated through review of Site Improve, and Google Analytics with key performance indicators such as length of time spent on the website, reduction of clicks to key content, and ultimately increased completion of inquiry forms the units of measure. Increased inquiry form completion and conversion from inquiry to application, and application to enrolled student are the interdependent measures of success and a shared responsibility with other positions within the Marketing Department such as our Marketing Planning Manager and Website Manager.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in marketing, journalism, creative writing or communications-related field of study

• Outstanding writing skills including the concepting and development of compelling story lines
• Must be an outstanding editor of other’s writing and able to provide structured feedback without personally rewriting stories, and editorial content
• Strong experience concepting, editing and producing professional quality videos through their own capabilities and through managing others
• Strong understanding of the use of various social media channels and how best to develop and deploy content for each
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, with a dedicated commitment to teamwork and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from across the institution
• High level of independence and ability to work effectively as an empowered professional with minimal supervision, while managing multiple relationships, and complex projects concurrently
• Teaching and mentoring students and less experienced team members
• Prior experience with staff management

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in photography and Photoshop
• Familiarity with graphic design applications including Dreamweaver, Illustrator and the broader Adobe Creative Suite
• Familiarity with content management systems
• Prior experience managing agency or other creative resources
