Position Summary

William & Mary Law School is seeking an Assistant Dean for Career Services. As a key contributor to the Office of Career Services team, the Assistant Dean provides students and alumni with guidance regarding career planning, job search strategy, and professional development. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, individual and group career advising; resume and cover letter review; interview preparation; creation and delivery of career- and professional development-related programs; and participation in alumni, bar association, and other professional networking events. This position reports to the Associate Dean for Career Services.

Required Qualifications

• A law degree or a graduate degree in career development, counseling, student services, or related field is required.
• Knowledge of career counseling and career development theory and practice, or demonstrate the ability to develop that knowledge through continuing education and on-the-job training.
• Knowledge of legal career opportunities, alternative professional career opportunities for law graduates, and employment trends in the legal profession, and/or demonstrated ability to quickly develop that knowledge through continuing education and on-the-job training.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively on an independent basis and as part of a team.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including frequent public speaking.
• Demonstrated ability to build constructive relationships with diverse constituencies, including students, graduates, employer representatives, bar/professional associations, faculty, administrators, and staff.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure in an extremely busy environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• JD strongly preferred as well as several years professional experience in law practice, career or other higher education student services, or legal recruiting/professional development is preferred.
• Prior legal professional experience working for a government agency or public interest organization is a plus.
• Proficiency with using technology for counseling, program development, and marketing/outreach to students, graduates, and employers.
• Knowledge of how to successfully use various social media platforms, including, but not limited to, LinkedIn and Twitter, for networking and communication purposes.
