Position Summary

The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) of the William & Mary Libraries is seeking a Special Collections Librarian for Public Services to deliver a range of user-focused services including, but not limited to:

• Coordination of onsite and remote reference and research services.

• Providing instruction to undergraduate and graduate classes on the use of special collections, and analyzing and interpreting primary sources.

• Development and implementation of policies and procedures for reference, duplication, access, stacks maintenance, security, and reading room services in the SCRC in accordance with identified standards and best practices.

• In coordination with the Library’s External Relations Office, promoting and marketing the SCRC’s initiatives, collections, programming, and services through tours, presentations, open houses, publications, social media, and other appropriate means.

• Building relationships with the Library’s Research Department and Instruction Team.

• Compiling statistics on the use of special collections.

• Curation of physical and online exhibits.

This position reports to the Director of Special Collections and supervises two part–time staff as well as students and volunteers.
As with all Special Collections staff, the selected candidate will also arrange and describe archives and manuscript collections and assist with enhancing the description of rare books and other special collections materials. Occasional evening and weekend hours are required.

The ideal candidate will enjoy working with people from diverse backgrounds, be committed to providing excellent customer services, and have a passion for developing effective and efficient research and reference services. S/he will have strong written and interpersonal communication skills, and be willing to bring innovative and engaging pedagogical approaches to the interpretation and use of primary source materials.

Required Qualifications

• Graduate degree in library/information science, archival studies, public history, or a related discipline.

• Experience providing public services in a special collections, special library or archival repository.

• Strong commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience using technology to provide reference and instructional services.

• Experience providing instruction with primary sources

• Experience supervising staff, students, or volunteers.

• Experience curating library exhibits.

Advertised Pay Range $45,500 to $60,000, commensurate with experience
