Position Summary

The College of William and Mary is accepting applications for the position of the Associate Director of WMSURE, a program that supports high-achieving undergraduate students who have overcome unusual adversity and/or are members of underrepresented groups who would contribute to campus diversity, many who are the first members of their families to attend college. WMSURE provides academic support, research opportunities, and campus and alumni connections for scholars. The program holds weekly workshops featuring faculty and staff throughout the campus, has daily office hours, and supports peer and faculty mentors. The Associate Director is part of the leadership team of WMSURE, working with the co-Directors of the program in the advisement and support of WMSURE scholars.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Associate Director oversees all logistical components of the program, including but not limited to the marketing and promotion of the WMSURE offerings such as workshops and special events, the recruitment and support of faculty and staff speakers at events, the support to scholars in obtaining internal and external funding for their research, and the coordination of the undergraduate and graduate fellows employed by the program. This position requires working closely with scholars of diverse academic interests and backgrounds and holding regular office hours each day to meet with the scholars individually or in small groups to address their specific needs. This position will support student scholars by providing resources, and will make necessary and appropriate referrals based on role as an advisor. They will work closely with the Roy R. Charles Center for Academic Excellence which supports student research and engaged learning and oversees the honors program. The Associate Director will also help develop strategic plans for fundraising and attend public events to obtain resources to support the program.

Required Qualifications

• Earned master’s degree and experience in higher education
• Ability to work with large-scale programming, examining their efficiency, and resource allocation;
• Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required;
• Significant experience working with diverse student populations and community members;
• Significant experience working in a higher education environment;
• Ability to build relationships and maintain trust, to assess and balance the needs of various stakeholders, and to identify and advocate for achievable solutions
• Competency in working with individuals and groups with a wide array of identity and life experiences, including gender, sexuality, class, race/ethnicity, disability, culture, and religion
• Ability to take initiative, work and think independently, and willingness to contribute to a team-oriented work environment
• Strong oral, written, evaluation, and presentation skills: ability to convey complex concepts and to communicate with students, faculty, staff, and community members in a manner that promotes dialogue and understanding
• Ability to foster a supportive and student-centered environment
• Ability to advise students individually and in collective groups – through student organizations – showing good judgment about when to make referrals, set boundaries, and equip students with skills and strategies to engage in self-advocacy
• Ability to identify and proactively respond to problems or emerging student needs
• Strong community-building, organizational, and time-management skills;
• Demonstrated ability to maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, administrators and external constituencies.
• Demonstrated ability to manage complex program operations in a team environment;
• Proven ability to undertake diverse and complex assignments with minimal supervision and resolve competing demands;
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including tact and diplomacy;
• Outstanding presentation and collaborative leadership skills;
• Ability to develop, interpret, and implement policies and procedures
• Ability to assist students in the development and conducting of research projects and obtain funding sources to support their research

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supervising staff and/or program teams;
• Experience mentoring students;
• Experience writing and managing grants;
• Experience making staffing, hiring, promotion, and other HR decisions;
• Previous undergraduate or graduate research experience;
• Experience with fundraising efforts (e.g., identifying and soliciting donors)
