Position Summary

The Department of Modern Languages & Literatures and the Linguistics Program at William & Mary seek applications for a tenure track position and joint appointment at the Assistant Professor level in Hispanic Studies & Linguistics, with expertise in Hispanic sociolinguistics. The successful candidate will demonstrate a record of empirically-grounded research in the Hispanic World that bridges the study of language and society. Research areas of special interest may include, for example, qualitative or quantitative sociolinguistics, language variation in social media, historical sociolinguistics, bilingualism and language maintenance, and language documentation. The applicant is expected to establish and maintain an active research program that inspires a highly motivated undergraduate student body. We especially value community-based research methods and experience mentoring undergraduates.

The teaching expectation is two courses per semester. The candidate will develop new courses in the area of expertise, and teach courses currently offered like Topics in Hispanic Cultural Studies, Spanish Phonetics, and Capstone Seminars in both programs; preference given to candidates able to teach courses on Language Attitudes, Language and Society, and Sociolinguistic Field Methods. Opportunities exist to contribute to our dynamic new general education curriculum (, as well as American Studies, Anthropology and Latin American Studies.

Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Spanish, Linguistics, or a related field at the time of appointment August 10, 2018.

Candidates must possess the skills to teach Hispanic language and culture at all levels. Evidence of previous teaching experience and native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English are required

Preferred Qualifications

Excellence in teaching and mentoring successful undergraduate research is preferred.
