Position Summary

The Office of Academic Advising (OAA) supports and supplements W&M’s faculty-advisor program. It collaborates with other campus offices – such as Admissions; Athletics; Center for the Liberal Arts; Cohen Career Center; Dean of Students; Registrar; Student Affairs, and The Writing Resource Center – to guide undergraduates toward a full and successful liberal arts education. The OAA works extensively with Student Affairs during Orientation for entering freshmen and transfer students in August and January. The OAA provides faculty advisors with essential information and training to help students meet their academic goals. The professional advisors in the OAA work directly with students to assist with curricular planning, and to convey information about W&M policies, procedures, and requirements for graduation. The OAA supervises a program of student peer advising, and its professionals make public presentations to students throughout the year.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Academic Advising: Provide advising services to support faculty advising model; assist students with major exploration and self-assessment process; delivering accurate information and advice to students about majors/minors and course options; making appropriate referrals to departments and other college resources; initiating appropriate interventions for those in academic difficulty; encouraging and enhancing networking skills for students; all with the purpose to help students make informed decisions.

OAA Support: Support the overall mission and functions of the OAA by collaborating with university colleagues.

Special Projects: Take the lead on all designated OAA projects that include but are not limited to: advisor-freshmen advisee matching, data management, reporting, and assessment. Prepare OAA reports and findings to distribute to colleagues. Make recommendations and implement solutions based on data. Track student progress toward requirements for graduation. Identify students who are not progressing/achieving milestones in a timely manner and coordinate effective corrective responses to guide students toward graduation. Pay particular attention to sophomores and juniors to provide information and opportunities for high impact practices and engagement activities. Collaborate effectively with colleagues in IT, the Registrar’s Office, the Dean of Students’ Office, amongst other partners.

Some weekend and evening work is required.

Required Qualifications

•Master’s degree in an Arts & Sciences discipline, higher education administration, or counseling.
•Academic advising and/or other relevant experience in areas such as career planning, educational planning, or counseling in a higher education setting.
•Demonstration of effective oral and written communication and of strong interpersonal skills.
•Experience working in a position that requires organizational and analytical skills, data analysis, and attention to detail.
•Demonstration of skills working with computers, software packages, and a variety of technological tools, including, but not limited to Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Excel, and information systems.
•Experience working effectively with a diverse constituency, such as Deans, department chairs and program directors, administrators, faculty and staff members, and students.

Preferred Qualifications

•Experience in working with student information systems and databases such as Banner, Blackboard, and Argos.
•Experience developing and facilitating a distance learning program or course.
•Academic advising experience at the college level, preferably using a faculty advising model.
