Position Summary

University Advancement includes all William & Mary efforts related to alumni engagement, private fundraising and philanthropic outreach, and marketing and advancement communications.

The Northeast Team (NYC – based) will achieve its goals by working in a highly collaborative fashion with faculty members, constituent development officers in the schools across campus, and with internal partners within William and Mary’s teams focused on alumni engagement, annual giving, marketing and communications, donor Relations and Stewardship. Reporting to the Managing Director of the Northeast team, each position collaborates extensively with colleagues across campus, as appropriate, to ensure prospects are moved along the pipeline and up the gift pyramid, as well as the coordination of major gift prospects to the appropriate constituent areas across campus.

William & Mary seeks a dynamic, strategic fundraiser to join the Regional Advancement Team based out of NYC. The ideal candidate will have outstanding communication and problem solving skills with a proficiency in a variety of software applications to include MS office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook). A self – starter, with a desire to reach aggressive goals, with demonstrated fluency in promoting visionary gift opportunities.

The following positions are full-time Professional.

Title and salary commensurate with background and qualifications.

  • Assistant Director, Regional Advancement (U10)
    The Assistant Director will be expected to develop a robust major gift portfolio by the end of year two of the incumbent’s tenure in the position. It is expected that s/he will secure 20 or more gifts totaling $500,000 – $1 million annually. Assistant Director coordinates prospect research with the Prospect Development and Information Strategy team to identify new major donor individual/ institutional prospects from the database and other sources Implements donor-centric advancement strategies designed to engage major gift prospects, many of whom have multiple philanthropic interests at William and Mary.
  • Associate Director, Regional Advancement (U11)
    The Associate Director will be expected to lead the development the portfolio into a robust major gift portfolio by the end of year two managing a portfolio of 125-150 prospects minimum, with one-on- one cultivation activities and solicitations of gifts. Goal expected to secure $1 million to $2 million in gifts annually. The Associate Director takes a lead role in planning and implementing development, engagement, fundraising campaign activities in the region. Also takes the lead in coordinating prospect research with the Prospect Development and Information Strategy team to identify new major donor individual/institutional prospects from the database and other sources in this key market to the success of the campaign. Researches and writes briefings to prepare colleagues, including university and advancement leadership and faculty, for effective meetings with major gift prospects.
  • Director, Regional Advancement (U15)
    The Director will be expected to lead the development the portfolio into a robust major gift portfolio by the end of year two managing a portfolio of 125-150 prospects minimum, yielding both endowment level (100K+) and annual gifts with one-on- one cultivation activities and solicitations of gifts. Goal expected to secure $2 million to $3 million in gifts annually. Plan and implement a regionally focused strategy for William & Mary’s principal, major, planned and leadership gift prospects in the Northeast Region for the President, Vice President for University Advancement, and other University leaders. Design regional engagement opportunities and events, draw up invitation lists for small, targeted gatherings and work closely with event staff to design content for all advancement events and communications in the region
Required Qualifications

Assistant Director:

  • Bachelor’s degree required with related experience or specialized expertise directly related to the position.
  • Strong writing skills and the ability to draft compelling proposals.
  • Experience or exposure to fundraising.

Associate Director:

  • Bachelor’s degree required with substantive experience or specialized expertise directly related to the position.
  • Strong writing skills and the ability to draft compelling proposals.
  • Experience soliciting/closing major gifts in a higher education or non-profit setting.
  • Equivalent experience in sales or a related field will be considered.

Director:

  • Bachelor’s degree with substantive experience and specialized expertise directly related to the position.
  • Strategic vision to develop and harness the potential of the larger community toward engagement as well as philanthropic goals.
  • Expertise in drafting and executing creative individual and region-wide donor and prospect strategies.
  • Substantive and progressively responsible knowledge and experience in academic fundraising or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications

Assistant Director:

  • Advanced degree (preferably a Master’s degree in related field).
  • Demonstrated experience soliciting/closing major gifts in a higher education or non- profit setting is desirable.
  • Familiarity experience with the Advance database is a plus.

Associate Director:

  • Advanced degree (preferably a Master’s degree in business or other related field).
  • Familiarity with Advance database.
  • Substantive and progressively responsible knowledge and experience in academic fundraising or a related field.

Director:

  • Advanced degree (preferably a Master’s degree in business or other related field).
  • Strong working knowledge and experience in the NYC Metro region.
  • Significant experience in higher education fundraising is desirable.
