Position Summary

The director is the leader and central executor for all advancement activity for the benefit of W&M Libraries, which includes building a culture of engagement and philanthropy, executing a strategic vision for the libraries’ advancement operations, and managing the library board of directors. The director will carry a portfolio of approximately 125 prospects, and will be responsible for soliciting gifts and commitments at and above $25,000 and leading and directing a comprehensive fundraising program for the libraries to include, but not limited to, leadership and major gifts, annual giving, planned gifts, and corporate and foundation relations. This individual must be keenly focused on pipeline development and moves management.

The Director is the chief fundraiser for the libraries and a strategic partner across campus. S/he will collaborate with regional fundraising teams and constituency unit fundraisers, and will work closely with the dean of university libraries and other senior officials in support of all development-related initiatives, to include fundraising, engagement events, and library development-related communications. The Director will be responsible for developing thorough and comprehensive briefings for the dean, the president, vice president for university development, associate vice president for development, and other university and development leaders as needed. The Director has a joint reporting relationship to the Dean of University Libraries and the Associate Vice President for Development, and will supervise a development associate.

The Director is responsible for the management and support of the W&M Libraries Board. This includes planning board meetings, working with the dean and board to maximize philanthropy, and ensure fluency among libraries staff and board members, as well as the management of special leadership boards for specified fundraising initiatives.

Finally, this position will coordinate library fundraising efforts for the final stage of the university’s 2015-2020 campaign For the Bold. The director is responsible for communicating key library messages and campaign priorities. S/he will assist in developing campaign communications, engagement/community-building activities, and stewardship strategies.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree required with substantive experience or specialized expertise directly related to the position.


  • Demonstrated ability to plan, execute, and close significant major gifts.
  • Proven ability to identify, qualify and cultivate prospective major gift donors and expertise in drafting and executing creative focused donor strategies.
  • Proven ability to reach aggressive goals.
  • Strong leadership, volunteer management and managerial skills and the ability to drive a culture of engagement and philanthropy.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, with fluency in using persuasive language to promote visionary gift opportunities.
  • A commitment to diversity of ideas and thoughts and capitalizing on the opportunities that this presents.
  • A strong work ethic, integrity and commitment to teamwork, with the willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues from across the institution.
  • Must demonstrate ability to work independently, with strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple and complex tasks and projects concurrently.
  • Proficiency in computer software programs, specifically MS Office Suite.


  • Experience in major gift fundraising or the equivalent.
  • Progressively responsible experience in academic fundraising or a related field in a nonprofit environment.
  • Experience managing boards and senior-level volunteers or the equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications


  • Advanced degree in a related or relevant field strongly desirable.


  • Extensive experience working in higher education to include collaboration with deans and faculty.
  • Experience supervising staff and managing budgets.
  • Experience working with or managing volunteer leadership boards.
  • A demonstrated record of success in a metrics-driven environment.
  • Experience with fundraising campaigns is a plus.
