Position Summary

The Summer Aide position located within Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) Wachapreague campus, performs entry-level manual tasks to support research operations both in the Laboratory and outdoor field setting during boat trips.

The responsibilities include:

  • Participation in the collection and sorting the samples.
  • Maintenance of cultured bivalves.
  • Record-keeping and data entry of collections and or results.
  • Other duties as assigned under direct supervision and or guidance.
Required Qualifications

High-school rising juniors or seniors, at least 16 years of age.


  • An affinity for the outdoors, with a desire to learn about marine flora, fauna and the coastal marine environment.
  • Basic familiarity with the use of the microscope.
  • Proficiency in computer software systems. Data entry skills with a high attention to detail.
  • Basic administrative skills, with the ability to perform clerical duties (filing, sorting organizing and record keeping).
Preferred Qualifications


  • Previous data entry experience.
  • Boating experience.

Conditions of Employment:
  • This is a temporary, 40 hour summer position for approximately three (3) months. May 15 through the end of August. This position is not eligible for benefits.
  • This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.
