Position Summary

The Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (CBNERR) strives to be a leader in applying science to solve coastal management programs and public/technical education to improve awareness of understanding of natural resources.

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science encourages applicants interested in marine/environmental education to apply for the Summer Marine Education Assistant position. The Ideal candidate will possess leadership ability and have knowledge and experience leading marine sciences activities with children of all ages.

The Summer Marine Science Education Specialist position assists the Education Coordinator and Education Specialist with implementation of 5- summer marine science camps.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Maintains a safe environment. Supervises camp participants.
  • Supports development of educational program of all ages. Assists with activities including crafts, games, demonstrations, etc.
Required Qualifications

High School Diploma with interest in environmental science, life science, education or related field.


  • Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with the ability to work independently and as an effective team member.
  • Ability to work with children of all ages, and oversee activities.

Experience working with children.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science, life science, education or related field or the equivalent combination of education, training and or experience directly related to the position.

Experience leading marine science education both inside and outside activities is highly desirable.

Advertised Pay Range Up tp $12.00 per hour, commensurate with experience.

Conditions of Employment:
  • This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the fair labor standard act.
  • This position is a temporary (hourly) position not to exceed 6 month.
  • All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed on average 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve month period beginning May 1 each year.
